What I Wish I Didn’t Bring to South America : Toiletries

Hello Friends!

Just a short post today to share a video I uploaded this weekend. I wanted to share with you what I brought with on my 2 week trip to South America in my toiletry kit. If you’ve read some of my other posts, or seen anything else on my channel on YouTube, you know I talk about this stuff a lot! I hope it’s helpful for someone, when I was getting ready for my trip I had a hard time finding packing lists specific to a girl, and specifically about toiletries. You’ll find a link to my video below as well as a detailed packing list for my toiletry kit.

Can’t wait to read your comments!
Happy travels, friends!

Follow my paper crane to South America!

Hola mis amigos!
I’m heading out today to South America! I love having a full day Rolf travel like this, it gives me a chance to update and connect with you even if it’s really short… And written on my iPhone!
I will be posting as actively as possible while down there. Most of the hostels we are staying in have wireless Internet. Mostly, what I wanted to let you guys know is this: as I travel from place to place, I’ll be documenting it via Instagram from my phone by way of a totem. I was trying to think if a small token I could carry with me and then take a photo of that item everywhere u went. (Think: the little garden gnome in Amelie.)
Instead of bringing something from however, I decided on something else. I’m love folding little paper cranes, and I do this all the time. They’re all over my office… And my friends cubes at work.. And our house. I love to leave them on restaurant tables with the check, or of we’ve already paid, made from the check.

So my plan is to fold a new crane whenever I can, Instagram it, and post it for you to follow. When I get home, I’ll put together a large post, but if you want to join in on the adventure with me now, just follow me on Instagram! Our name is : SeeAllTheThings, and there is already a few crane pictures up.
Thanks for stopping by, and happy travels! I’d love to see what you take pictures of, I can’t wait to follow all of you back.

What to do when it’s 110 degrees fahrenheit…

If you live somewhere in one of the dozen states reporting record high temperatures over the last few weeks, you’ve been presented with a potential problem. But we don’t like to focus on problems, we like to look for creative solutions. Or at least, we like to try! Living in the Midwest, I didn’t have air-conditioning as a kid and I do now, but I still have to leave the house some times. So, what can one do to Beat the Heat? Here are a few creative suggestions collected from AtW (Around the Web).

*A little side note: AtW is going to be a new segment on the blog, so if you have suggestions, watch for new categories in the “coming soon” section at the end of every AtW article! Thanks, and don’t forget to add us to your RSS and Like us on Facebook. It’ll just make our day =)

Tutti-Frutti Popsicles

There is nothing half as refreshing on a hot day as a popsicle. I used to eat those freezey sugary juice things all the time! (…OK, if I’m being honest, I had one last week…) But if you’re looking for a healthy, low calorie cold treat, try this: All you need is one of those make-your-own popsicle molds. That link goes to one on Amazon.com, but I know I’ve seen them at Target, too. Then, put in some fresh cut fruit. Harder, more citrus-y fruits work best: think strawberries, kiwi, black berries or pineapple (my favorite!). Put a few pieces, mix & match if you like or all one flavor, into each mold. Then, fill with white grape juice! You could also use cran-apple, or grape, but the lowest sugar content will lead to the lowest calorie count, which will then be the most healthy. Keep in mind, the fruit and the fruit juice will be naturally sweet, do don’t worry about using OVERLY sweetened juice.

Drink lots of water!

It may not sounds like news, but it is important. When the heat index reaches a certain level, our bodies don’t exactly cope well with it. We need to keep taking in more water to replace the vast amounts we are sweating out. We become dehydrated much more quickly than you would think, or would even realize, so do what I do. Carry around a water bottle with you at all times. Obviously, I suggest one of those reusable, eco friendly ones, but do what you have to do. Water is the most important thing. Which leads me to the next tip…

Be a good neighbor.

The elderly and the very young, as well as the mental handicapped might not be able to realize when they are dangerously dehydrated. I was listening to NPR the other day, and they were talking about the way our bodies release and cope with being over heated. When we are very young, we don’t sweat the same as we do as adults and the same goes for when we get in to our golden years. Keeping an eye on your kids, and your older neighbors is important. Sometimes a friendly reminder might be what someone needs to pick up a water bottle of their own.

Well, that’s all for now folks! Have a nice, cool day and Happy Travels! Leave you “stay cool tips” below, and don’t forget to check out our YouTube Channel!

Travel Must-Haves & Favorites (1)

Hi, friends! Today I want to share with you the first three Travel Favorites of this new series I’m starting. I will be posting two or three new favorites in a video and a post every week or so. If you have suggestions, I’d love to hear them! Click here to watch the video.

So the first thing are these travel brushes from EcoTools. I got these on clearance at Target a few weeks back. These are the Limited Edition “beautiful expressions kabuki set” by EcoTools and I’m not sure if they have them at Target any more, but I did find them on Amazon. The set comes with 4 brushes: conceal, bronze, contour and buff. I love these things! They are so light and small, absolutely perfect for travel. I think it’s pretty easy to find small brushes for travel, especially eye-shadow brushes, but I think these are pretty unique. For sure, I’d bring the angled ‘bronze’ kabuki brush and the “buff” flat top brush, the other two would be more secondary. Depending on how much space I had for make up, and how much make up I was bringing, I would bring either just those two or all four. All in all, I love these brushes, total Target win. (I put a picture of the back of the packaging with brush descriptions at the end of this post).

Favorite number 2 is the Summit to Sea travel clothes line. This thing is great, got it at REI for about 8 bucks. Really handy, teeny package for an 11.5 foot clothing line. I’ve really only used this on beach vacations, but it was really helpful for drying swim suites and clothing that got wet in the rain. I don’t think you’d “need” this on every trip, for example if you were only going to be gone a few days or something. But especially if you were going to be gone a while and we’re going to wash laundry, this would be so nice to have to hang in the corner of your hostel room or off the bunk bed to let things dry.

Favorite number three is a notebook, but more specifically, a Moleskine notebook. I have carried one of these, large or small, on every trip. I start jotting things down in the notebook when I start planning, things like the hostel or hotel phone number, country codes, simple phrases if I’m going somewhere with a language I don’t know… things like that can be a life saver when you get somewhere that your phone doesn’t work, or the batter died on the flight over. Honestly, any note-book will work, and I have some great ones that aren’t Moleskine, I’ve just had the best luck with them. There’s a pocket in the back, super helpful, and I prefer the ones with a rubber band that wraps around to keep everything in. The website is great, and you can download templates that you can paste into the notebook. Personally, I love the calendar one and the maps… really helpful, very clear and simple layouts. I find that blank canvasses like this bring out the most creativity, whether it’s planning a trip or sketching or writing. What do you use yours for?

Thanks for stopping by! Look for the next set of Travel Faves in a week or so, make sure you don’t miss it by following us on Twitter, or using the RSS feed button to add us to your reader. Click here to watch the video that goes with this post on YouTube.

Have a great day!

How to Make a Small World Smaller

Hola! This is the written-out version of the tutorial I just posted on YouTube using a few “iPhoneography” apps. Let me know if you have any questions, or what your favorite iphoneography apps are. There is a list with links to the iTunes App Store in my previous post, but this is a more detailed tutorial, with screen shots. OK, let’s get started!

First, I used Adobe PS Express.

Select a photo from your iPhone edit it as you like. The main thing I usually do for a TinyPlanet photo is to increase the saturation and make sure the horizon line is as straight as possible. Save the photo to your phone.

Next: Next, open the TinyPlanet app. Select your just-edited photo from your photo library, and then select the little “tiny planet” button. There are two options:

After the picture finishes processing, it will look similar to this: Next, I usually crop a the photo a bit using Adobe PS Express again.

This puts more emphasis on the planet, less on the negative space around it. Now, it depends on what you’re looking for but I wanted to be able to see the little row boat better for this image.

Finally, I edit the image using pixlr-o-matic. I love the different filters, boarders and light effects, this is an amazing app and even better because it’s free! Even if you don’t have an iPhone, you can use it in your browser or download it to your computer as a free program.

Now that I’m happy and “finished” with my image, I save it and share it! Most frequently, I upload to Instagram, but I also use the WordPress app from my phone to add them to my blog posts.

I hope this post was helpful! Let me know if you have any questions, and don’t forget to read the previous post for more details about each app.

Thanks! Have a great day!

iPhoneography App Review

Hi everybody! I just wanted to write a short post to go with the last video I put up about the iPhoneography apps. There were a few apps I used in the video and I wanted to include a little more information about them here. These apps are great and I’ve never had an issue with any of them. You’ll find below links to the app store for each one and the price it’s listed for. I did get one of them “on sale”,  and I recommend following iPhoneography blog, they have great posts and that’s how I usually hear about “sales” with photography apps.

PS Express  $Free         Great for basic editing on your phone, features like contrast and sharpness adjustments, as well as borders and different effects make this a really robust app for free. I love the “flip” feature: you can flip a photo horizontally or vertically.

Tiny Planets  $0.99         Really fun app. Can make “tiny planets” or “tiny tubes” which is basically the exact opposite of the tiny planets. I like the way the planets turn out better than the tubes, but its a neat feature.

Pixlromatic $Free        My current FAVORITE app on my iPhone. So many different effects, boarders and filters, and all for free! Only down side is you can only choose one ‘edit’ from each of the three categories. Work-around is to save the photo and re-edit a few times if you wanted to layer filters or effects, but this makes it a much more elaborate and intensive process. Over all though, this is the only down side.

A+ Signature  $1.99 (I only paid $0.99 during a sale)           Great app for adding words or or watermarks or even drawing on photos. Love this.

Instagram (Follow me! => SeeAllTheThings) $Free    Great app, everyone knows it! If you’re not already a user, you’re gonna want to get on this band wagon.

WordPress app to post $Free       Great app from a great website. Easy to use, great for on the go. I do a lot of my blog editing and basic comment-approving from work on my lunch breaks so it’s so nice to be able to do that from my phone, and not have to carry my lap-top.

Thanks for stopping by! What are you favorite iPhoneography apps? Leave them as a comment below, I would love to check it out.

Take a Flying Leap Day, 2012

Leap Day has always been interesting to me, but this year was especially good timing. Personally, I was really in need of a bonus day. A day that feels more like a gift than a “regular” day. A day that felt like a bonus. A day like that shouldn’t be spent working in a tiny cube for the man, a bonus day should be spent doing something epic and amazing! With that in mind, as soon as I realized that 2012 was a Leap Year, I marked off February 29 in my work calendar for PTO (Paid Time Off). I didn’t know what I was going to do or how I would spend those 24 beautiful, extra hours, but I knew for certain that I did not want to spend them at my regular job. I didn’t call in pretend-sick, I was responsible with my plan but I needed that mental health day as badly as I wanted it.

10:00 AM Wednesday 29 February 2012

My alarm goes off. I had set it the night before, after staying up until about 1:30 in the morning, so that I wouldn’t sleep in all day. I know some people wake up bright eyed and bushy tailed at the a**-crack of dawn, but I am not one of those people. If nothing wakes me up, I will sleep and sleep… and enjoy every last minute of it. So, I set the alarm for 10… and snoozed for about an hour and a half. It was glorious.

11:30 AM

I got up, washed up and made an epic breakfast: chopped spinach with lemon juice and flax seed; cage free egg whites, scrambled with pepper and tiny bit of salt; froot loops with skim milk; chai tea with skim milk. It was delicious and amazing and I enjoyed it while catching up on some T.V.

2:30 PM

Rock Climbing at VE

After filming some video for a YouTube video I was working on, I got ready to go to Vertical Endeavors to go rock climbing. I hadn’t been rock climbing in years and years, so I was really looking forward to it. I practice yoga regularly and while a nice long 90 minute hot class would have been a great way to celebrate too, I wanted to do something that felt new and different to mark this day. I intended to go earlier in the day, but there had been a huge snow storm the night before so I had to wait for the plow to come through our alley or I wasn’t going to be able to get my little car out…

6:00 PM

Tuna Melt + RootBeer Float

After a great few hours at VE, I was really hungry! I did a search on my phone for the closest restaurants and chose one that I’d never been to before: The Bad Waitress. I had heard of it before, but had never had the pleasure of eating there. I sat at the diner-style bar and ordered a tuna melt (I had never eaten a real tuna melt before) and a root beer float (because everyone knows you drink root beer floats on Leap Day). Delicious! And great service, I will be back for sure.

8:30

I took my time at the restaurant and headed home. I filmed some more (the Leap Day resolutions that go with this post) and worked on this blog.

I spent the rest of the evening hanging out at home and relaxing. It was such an energizing and revitalizing day, I came away with one perspective that I thought I already knew: When given the chance to balance your life and your work, TAKE that chance! I have x amount of vacation days per year, and I am very lucky to have those day. However, there are people I know at work that don’t even take all of their vacation days every year. And they don’t roll over! It isn’t like you can save them up and use them for a long trip sometime… If you have the time, TAKE your TIME! Be smart about it, don’t get your self fired and don’t leave work undone. It’s like any good yogi will tell you: maximum exertion and then maximum release… Shavasana!

Thanks for stopping by! Check out my video about my Leap Day resolutions and tell me yours! I would LOVE to hear what your LD Resolutions are, leave them in the comments below. Thanks again!

What’s in my travel kit? Part 1:The Bag

“Why buy good luggage? You only use it when you travel.” –Yogi Berra

When I went in search of a new toiletry bag last year… I was not excited. I had had this same, great, perfect sized toiletry bag since high school! It lasted forever, it had this great almost water tight area that zipped closed for shampoos and body washes… There were elastic loops for make up brushes and small pockets for jewelery… Anyway, I loved it. I couldn’t imagine finding another to replace it but I knew it was time to move on when I zipped that lovely leak-resistant compartment closed and the ancient clear-plasticy front ripped away from the seams of the zipper, effectively demolishing any hope of restraining liquidy soap spills.

I decided, being the grown up that I am, that I would start my search not at Target this time, but at Macy’s. I had purchased a great over-night bag by Fossil the year before on Black Friday and I loved it. I use that bag as my carry on when going on a longer trip or as my only bag for shorter ones. But more on that some other time…

I went to Macy’s specifically looking for a Fossil bag, I will admit, partly because a good friend of mine had used one of their toiletry bags when she had stayed at my house last spring. It was a good size and a playful print and it had been in the back of my mind somewhere for a while. I found a similar one, checked out the different compartments, and fell in love. Now, once I used it for a trip, I discovered that it does have a few flaws, and I want to go over the features and benefits of the kit here. All in all, however I will tell you that I love it and I have learned how to work with it, what it is best for, etc. I hope this is helpful to you and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below! This is the first part of a series on what I pack in my toiletry bag, depending on the destination and activities there. But I wanted to talk a little bit first about the bag it self.

The Fossil Key-Per Toiletry Kit: Pros vs Cons

Pro

  • Love the creative pattern and lively design
  • Hanger extends out of the top for easy hanging in hotel closet or on the back of a door
  • Three separate compartments
    • One clear, more flat design
    • One larger extended pocket design
    • One much larger, more ridged design (for your bottles, liquids, etc).
  • Favorite thing: The bottom largest compartment is Velcroed on, very securely. So this compartment could be removed and used for short one or two overnights when you don’t need the other space! Great space saver and works really well. I always just use this detachable compartment when I stay over at my folks house. I usually only really need contact solution, my face wash, lotion, etc. So I don’t really need the other space.

Cons

  • The entire case folds up upon itself, and is a great space saver. However, depending on how much you have packed in the middle compartment, the case does not always close as securely or tightly as I would like
  • The case/kit is only held closed by two semi-strong magnets. If I only have a few things in the middle compartment, or those items are very strategically packed, they it works fine. However, if one thing is of place or I’m in a slight hurry, I find it’s difficult to maneuver the case’s magnets to the optimal positions.
  • Wouldn’t work well in a carry on <or> Not the best choice for keeping TSA carry-on approved liquids in a carry on bag.
    • I have seen some cases more recently that have a clear detachable pouch that could easily be used alone or together with the rest of the kit. On my last trip to Costa Rica, I had one small clear TSA approved “1 liter” bag for my small bottles of liquids and the rest of my toiletries in my larger kit. While traveling in the country, I just kept my clear pouch in the large compartment and then more handy on flight days.

Again, overall, I love this bag but there are some things to consider when choosing a new toiletry kit or bag and I hope this was helpful. I’ve tried to link some other options in here, and be sure to check out the video on our YouTube channel that goes with this post where you can really see the bag “in action”.  =)

Love,

To Stay or Go? Being Sick & Away

This is my kind of town, Chicago is

My kind of town, Chicago is

My kind of people, too

People who smile at you.

A few months back, my friends invited me to join them for a winter weekend trip to Chicago, IL. I was excited, I had only been to Chicago once before and was under the legal drinking age at the time so my girl friends and I had found other, more touristy things to do. We went to the Shedd Aquarium and saw penguins and dolphins. We visited the Sears Tower a-la-Ferris Bueller, and took goofy pictures. We were young, though, and limited to activities that our minuscule budget would allow. We had a great time and I still look back on that Road-Trip as one of the better vacations I’ve had.

Penguin at the Shedd

Now though, I was really looking forward to experiencing Chi-Town as an adult. In the weeks leading up to the trip, enough planning was done to ensure an exciting weekend plus enough time left free to explore and relax. We were staying at the FourPoints Hotel, booked through Hotels.com. The hotel was 2 blocks from The Miracle Mile shopping area, walking distance from the L (the subway/elevated train system in Chicago) and minutes from great restaurants, bars and museums. An escape from the proverbial hustle and bustle of the Holiday Season was exactly what I needed, the trip was timed for a week before Christmas, and I could not have been more ready.

Except for one little thing: I was beyond sick. I don’t mean “sniffles, gee I should have brought more tissues” sick. I mean hacking cough, can’t breathe with out feeling like I’m having a minor heart attack, sinuses completely clogged, dizzy, no appetite, nauseous, ‘was that a small piece of my lung I just coughed up?!’ sick. It was awful and it had started about 4 days before the trip. It was now Thursday night, three of my friends were coming in the morning to pick me up at 9 am for the 7 hour drive to Chicago. I was packed. I was exhausted. I was convinced, as every sick person is who as something exciting planned for the next day, that if I just drank one more glass of orange juice and took just two more vitamin C pills… that I would be good as new before they arrived.

I was not good as new, I was a wreck. I woke up just as miserable, if not worse, that morning. I took a long, hot shower convinced (wrongly, yet again) that the steam would help me and my sad cough. I drank another giant bottle of Minute-Maid. I moved slowly through the house gathering last minute items for the 4 day would-be adventure, and when my friends arrived, I hobbled out to the car.

The Chicago Theater

Now, I slept almost the entire way there. I slept in every morning of that weekend, waving off offers for breakfast. I moved like molasses in June and had a maximum of 4 drinks the entire vacation. I made a crucial decision that Thursday night before we left: I decided not to skip the trip, despite feeling more sick than I had in years. The thing is, I don’t remember weighing pro-vs-con. I remember only thinking, very clearly: “OK Melissa… now, you’ve been sick since at least Sunday. The doctor in the clinic {we have a clinic at work, I went Wednesday afternoon to make sure it was just a bad chest cold and not pneumonia. I am terrified of developing pneumonia again… but more on that some other time} …said that while it’s probably bronchitis, you’re not contagious any more. So you can go. You wont infect The Friends.” (To answer you question: Yes, when I’m sick, I think/speak to my self in the third-person.    …Wait, you don’t?)

Scrumptious deep dish peperoni from Giordano's

I chose to go even though I could have easily stayed home and slept for three days. I chose to see and to do. I chose deep-dish, REAL Chicago style pizza over my couch at home. I chose to NOT miss out. The truth is, I have missed out too much in the past. This same group of friends went to Chicago 2 Christmas’ ago and I didn’t go. I was broke. I was tired. I ‘had’ to work. At the time, I thought that I didn’t have the choice but I know now that I did then just as much as I do now. The one commonality of all the blogs written by those who have “escaped” the doldrums of the cube-life is just that: they realized that they did have a choice and chose, very much on purpose, to venture out into the world and experience life instead of only reading about it and making lists of what-ifs.

Sure, I could have stayed home and maybe 20 years from now I wont remember going or not going. But despite feeling like death, I had an amazing time. My friends are wonderful and we had a great adventures that weekend. I don’t regret going and I am certain that I would have been more miserable at home, missing out. Yes, I believe that the risks one takes should be calculated risks. (That’s why I went to the doctor before the trip). But I don’t believe that a life spent risk-less is any more safe than one full of potentially questionable actions or decisions.

They say that as you grow older, the stuff your parents told you when you were young will start to sound true… I’m not sure if that’s true for everything, but then again I’m still in my twenty’s. There is one thing however, that I firmly believe and have even adopted as a mantra from time to time: You never know until you try. This is true, I am certain of that, and there is no way around it. I don’t know when I’ll get back to Chicago but I know now, because I was there, that it is my kind of town. I am so happy that in all honesty, I probably wont remember the coughing and the drowsiness in 20 years. I’ll remember the pizza, the laughter and the epic karaoke. I’ll remember the bad-ass bartender chick who chased down the dude who tried to stiff her with nothing but a bar-key. I’ll remember that when she got back in the hole-in-the-wall bar a few minutes later and we asked “did you catch him?!” she replied ” *pfff*  yea, but mother-f***er only had 4 dollars on him.”

I will remember that I chose to go, and that it was worth it. And next time, I’ll choose to go again.

~Melissa
